Emilio’s Scholarship was established to honor Emilio Hernandez-Santillan, a sixth grader at Trinity who lost his life to cancer in 2018.
Exceedingly kind and thoughtful, Emilio loved the outdoors, and loved challenging himself to be physically active. He was a gifted athlete, a member of Trinity’s cross country team, and an Outdoor Ed student. He was a friend to all who knew him. It is that spirit which we honor with this scholarship.
The scholarship is primarily funded by the annual Emilio’s Fun Run each winter, as well as through restricted gifts to Trinity’s Annual Fund.
Award amounts range from $1,000 to $5,000 depending on the number of qualified applicants and availability of funds. Approximately $10,000 is awarded each year to Emilio’s Scholarship recipients.
I had the good fortune of knowing Emilio as a cross country runner and– my favorite– an Outdoor Education student. Emilio was an outstanding student, athlete and person. He was well- organized, neat, efficient, humble and had a strong desire to learn. He was kind to his classmates and had a sheepish grin that you could not help but love. He was always prepared for class and Outdoor Ed. His pack was much neater and more organized than mine.
He had a competitive spirit, too! I was looking forward to him being a top runner and an Outdoor Ed leader.
